As one of the nation's top research universities, MSU prides itself on making breakthrough discoveries and finding practical solutions that improve people's lives, from the cancer-fighting drugs cisplatin and carboplatin to key ingredients in Tamiflu. By expanding research funding and providing more opportunities for graduate and undergraduate student involvement, the possibilities for research are endless—and so is our vision.

The Michigan State University College of Education has a long tradition of excellence. The college’s graduate programs in elementary and secondary education have ranked first in the nation for 14 consecutive years, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2009 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools."

This reputation stems, in part, from the research accomplishments of faculty members such as William Schmidt, an internationally known expert in math and science education. Among his many roles at the university, Schmidt serves as principal investigator of a $35 million National Science Foundation project to improve science and math teaching and achievement in K-12 schools.

One portion of the project is a comprehensive survey of 300,000 students and 5,000 teachers in Michigan and Ohio schools. Beyond appearing in academic journals, survey results will be used to help transform the way U.S. schools groom students for knowledge-economy jobs—just one way that MSU is working, in the great land-grant tradition, to enrich community and economic life.
