At MSU—the top public university in the United States for study abroad—students choose from more than 245 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents.
Ronald Bowman, a junior majoring in broadcast journalism, spent the 2006-07 academic year in Mexico, where he became fluent in Spanish.
During his trip, Bowman stayed with a host family so he could learn the language faster. Outside of his classes, he volunteered with local churches and with the organization Casas Hogares—an orphanage that emphasizes the importance of mentorship and school work—where he led recreation activities and taught children about American culture.
:"By the time I left, I felt like I was a citizen," says Bowman.
With the increasing Latino population in the United States, Bowman believes being bilingual will help him explore different broadcast news markets and work to bridge communication gaps among communities in the United States.
