Microscopy - Entamoeba histolytica

Entamoeba histolytica trophozoite
Trophozoite:  Size ranges from 15-60 um with an averge of 25 um.  Stained specimens have a distinct nuclear envelope with fine chromatin granules.  The endosome is small and centrally placed.

Cyst with Chromatoidal Body:  Early stages of cyst formation of have chromatoidal bodies (nucleic acids) present.  These bodies can vary in size but always have rounded ends.

Cyst:  Mature cysts have four nuclei with centrally placed endosomes.  Cyst size averages 12 um but ranges from 10-20 um in diameter.
