I’m examining the significance of participating in urban debate leagues and why students choose to be involved with debate. I want to understand how these debaters develop critical literacy skills. I also want to address how these students’ teachers view their roles teaching debate and how they employ culturally sustaining pedagogies.”
Raven Jones Stanbrough studies curriculum, instruction, and teacher education. A recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award for urban education engagement, Stanbrough is passionate about teaching young people to find their voice through debate. She’s also helping to prepare the next generation of Spartan educators in the Metro-Detroit area, where she plans to return after earning her doctorate.
