Oct. 22: Spring 2021 housing update

Dear Spartan,

We know many of you are wishing you were here on campus, and we wish you were here too! Campus is just not the same without all of the students. Recently, the university shared its willingness to bring additional students back to campus, for spring 2021, if they have a need or want to be here. MSU Residential and Hospitality Services has carefully considered how we can safely expand on-campus housing, and we will be able to offer housing to about 2,500 more students.

While we are still committed to providing a welcoming, secure, and successful student experience in our residence halls, please note that there are many health and safety measures  students need to adhere to while on campus. All residential students are held to the MSU Community Compact. This includes wearing a face covering outdoors, as well as indoors when not in your closed room, maintaining physical distancing, and practicing good hygiene. Residents are also required to complete the MSU Health Screening form each day. Additionally, residents will be required to participate in the COVID-19 Early Detection Program.

Students residing on campus for spring will be placed in a single room, within a combination of suite-style halls and community-style bathroom halls. While most students in suite-style halls will not share their bathroom, we will offer the opportunity for a small number of students to share a suite. We will look at placing students who are part of a living-learning community near each other, though it may not be in their community’s usual residence hall. Students will have the ability to indicate a bathroom-type preference, though we cannot guarantee we will be able to honor all requests.

As we look to increase our offerings, we are unsure of the demand and if we will have a space for everyone who requests one. Our request review criteria will include situations such as housing-related insecurities, needing additional assistance to be academically successful, those with in-person or hybrid courses, and graduate and professional students. Similar to fall semester, we will review each individual student’s situation.

The request form will go live in your My Housing account on Monday, November 9 and will close on Monday, November 16. We anticipate being able to share approvals by Wednesday, November 25.

We recognize you may have additional questions, and we will share specific details as they become available.
