Weekly Coronavirus Communications Update - Aug. 7

Colleagues:

This week, the president provided additional direction on new vaccine and return to mask wearing requirements for the fall semester and more information will be shared in the coming weeks on how we all can work together to keep our campuses and communities safe.

It has been a busy couple of weeks, and I hope you all get a weekend full of rest and relaxation.

Important updates:

  • Monday, Provost Woodruff sent a message to all faculty and academic staff providing them with guidance and resources for the fall semester.
  • Also Monday, The MSU Museum announced it will reopen after a year and a half closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The MSU Museum will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 7, along with its new leadership.
  • Wednesday, Senior Vice President Vennie Gore and Associate Provost Mark Largent sent a message to undergraduate students with important reminders for the fall semester. A copy of that message is attached.
  • Thursday, President Stanley provided additional direction on the university’s requirement that all students, faculty and staff get vaccinated before Aug. 31.
  • Also Thursday, University Communications in coordination with several units on campus updated its FAQs on Together We Will to answer commonly asked questions on the university’s indoor mask requirement and vaccination requirement. These updated FAQs should be helpful when responding to calls and emails on these requirements and what they mean for our community.
  • The university also provided Thursday updated COVID-19 directives, outlining the expectations of the Spartan community with respect to masking, vaccinations and adherence to public health directives.

Spartan Stories:

  • Despite economic uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan State University received $232.2 million in gifts and pledges between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, some of which supported immediate student needs during a challenging year. Read more here.
  • President Stanley appeared on Paul W. Smith’s WJR broadcast on Tuesday. Listen here to his interview to talk about how we’re focused on safety for the fall return.
  • Kelly Holsinger, a senior majoring in entomology, wrote a student perspective about remote learning. She shared her story with MSUToday earlier this week.

As always, please continue to check our Together We Will website for the latest information on our response to the pandemic. Attached is an updated 800 script for you and your units to use when responding to callers or those who have questions about MSU’s response to COVID-19.

Best,

Emily
