Weekly Coronavirus Communications Update - Aug. 28

Colleagues,

Move-in is in full swing. I want to give a special thanks to all of those who are helping make the move-in experience for our students and families special and safe. For those interested in helping our students move on campus, volunteer sign up times are still available. Helping students move in is a great way to connect with our new students and share in the excitement of the start of a new academic year.

 Important updates:

  •  Tuesday, University Communications (through the Together We Will email account) sent reminders to all students, faculty and staff of the Aug. 31 deadline to get vaccinated as part of the university’s vaccination requirement this fall. Included in the faculty and staff reminder message was a podcast in which President Stanley and members of his leadership team answered employee questions about the vaccination requirement and shared additional information on MSU’s plans to keep Spartans safe this fall.
  • Friday, University Communications partnered with MSU Police to send reminders via text message to students, faculty and staff regarding the university’s vaccination requirement and its Aug. 31 deadline.
  • Also Friday, MSU Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Jabbar Bennett sent a message to campus highlighting the importance of empathy, grace and compassion as we begin to return to campus and in-person experiences together.
  • Throughout the week, University Communications continued to add content to the FAQs section of the Together We Will website, including questions on:
    • financial aid for non-compliant students,
    • clarifications on vaccination requirements for employees on leave
    • information on how students and employees can comply with the early detection program requirement if they are working or studying away from the university’s main campus in East Lansing.
  • As a reminder, the following vaccination clinics are available locally to assist individuals in getting their first and second doses:
      • 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at the Breslin Student Events Center, 534 Birch Rd., East Lansing (Pfizer)
      • 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at the Bailey St. Parking Lot, 139 Bailey St., East Lansing (Pfizer and J&J)
      • 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Breslin Student Events Center, 534 Birch Rd., East Lansing (Pfizer)

Spartan Stories:

  • MSU medical student, Zach Morehouse, is part of a team that helped to develop new testing protocols for COVID-19 that require half the time and resources of even the current testing gold standard — without sacrificing accuracy.

As always, please continue to check our Together We Will website for the latest information on our response to the pandemic, and MISpartan Impact for stories on partnerships and collaborations across the state.

Best,
Emily
