"I always kind of had the feeling that when people looked at some of these science fiction things, we were going to get a big laugh" John Agar

Disclaimer: Even though my page teases John about the cheesiness factor of his movies, I really enjoy his work.
This is all meant in fun and in the spirit of my love of campy movies. Enjoy!

John Agar - 1921 - 2002

John passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2002. His family and friends, as well as his fans, will miss him.

I've just uploaded an article I wrote about John for BellaOnline last year, and it can be found at my Classic SF/Fantasy TV site.

 Amazing Agar Facts!

John Agar has always been, and will continue to be, Y2K compliant. Rest assured that all your favorite John Agar films will be viewable after January 1, 2000. Feel better now?

When a friend of mine from rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc told his mother about this page, here is what she said. Honestly. "Oh! John Agar! I know John Agar! . . . One of the finest actors who ever graced the big screen! He's groovy... there was no one who could act like John Agar. He brought those horrid pictures to life. Acting ability has been surpassed only by William Shatner." Thanks for sharing this, Weretorgo!

Prior to becoming an actor in his mid-20's, John was a physical education instructor at March Field AFB.

Did you know that John once owned an amusement park called "John Agar's Land of Kong"? It's now under different ownership and name, but you can still get a look at one of the cheesiest parks in America at "Dinosaur World"

"I had never planned to be an actor, and it was thrust upon me at a very early age. It was something I really wasn't ready for". - John Agar, 1988.

John's family was famous in Chicago in the meat packing business.

At last report, John was 6'3" tall.

Want to read more about John's career and marriage to Shirley Temple? A nice, if slightly biased article exists at the Classic Images website, The Extraordinary Career of John Agar.

What's in a name? Let's check our dictionary, shall we?

agar
Pronunciation:
'-g&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Malay agar-agar
Date: 1889
1 : a gelatinous colloidal extractive of a red alga (as of the genera Gelidium, Gracilaria, and Eucheuma) used especially in culture media or as a gelling and stabilizing agent in foods
2 : a culture medium containing agar

Having conquered alcoholism, John retired from acting to become an insurance salesman, but returned to the silver screen in 1976 with a small role in "King Kong".

ODE TO JOHN
Or
HIS AGARNESS

by Jean Jackson

It was Saturday Eve, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even the louse
On the tube, playing hero, but tepidly. Bizarre.
Oh, I get it. LOL! It's just our own John Agar!

Swaggering and frolicking with nominal skill,
His acting so limited the 'bots call it 'nil'.
Watching this week's adventure is rapturous bliss,
The riffing is soaring. But the acting? This?

We're happy to scorn, delighted with glee,
Smirking and hooting, a veritable spree!
At our John Agar, vapid and pompous
The barely adequate, threatening to swamp us!

Chorus)
John, you're worth a barrel of mirth
And we're so glad that you're our new fad,
Because you're a target and we're in the market
For an arrogant bore whose been haaaaaaad!

It's Saturday Eve, here we are in your
TV room, thinking, um, 'stamina' and 'tenure'.
Vast quantities of film, a resume gone wild
Affably prolific. Hm. Has Agar just smiled?

Oh, joy! This website is part of a webring! To follow the links to the rest of the ring, chock full of fascination, bemusement, paranoia and confusion, you must go down, down, down to the bottom of this page....

Finally, here's what I hope will be the definitive database of John's accomplishments. Movies marked with a have been featured on Mystery Science Theatre 3000. This list was compiled from a large number of sources, many of them contradictory, so I would love it if you would E-Mail me with any corrections, additions, or links to other sites of interest. Thank you and goodnight.
