"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too, can become great."
-Mark Twain

Don't Quit - by John Greenleaf Whittier
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyong of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out,
Dont' give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is falure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
For all the sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: "It might have been!"

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

A Little Advice - by Paula Campbell (1999 SPOM Graduate)
So maybe you're done, or just starting out,
You may be sure or full of doubt,
But either way I thought I'd share,
A little advice because I care.
Hug your child at least once a day,
A little love goes a long way.
Take time for you, believe me I know,
Your child's not the only one who needs to grow.
Realize when, at times, you need help,
Then remember to ask, that's the first step.
Ask questions of teachers, of family, of friends,
Know your limits, it's no help to pretend.
Read your books, good notes you should keep,
But know that sometimes it's better to sleep.
When your child is crying, when the bills are not paid,
When professors dont' listen, and you fight FIA;
Find a friend, take a break,
Have a cry, for your sake.
Never give up, don't ever quit,
In the end you'll know it's worth all the s***.
Make use of the group and be of use too,
You may be the frame, but SPOM is the glue.
Be there when they need you, whoever they are,
Someday you'll need them (or maybe their car).
Studying's good and you'll learn a lot,
But it's not just your classes in which you are taught.
Take pictures, make memories, so you'll always know,
The struggle was worth it, even with child in tow.
Someday you'll see when you look in a child's eyes,
You've already won, and your child is first prize.

"A wish changes nothing. A decision changes everything."

For You - by Paula Campbell (1999 SPOM Graduate)
You brought me here, crying and cold.
Then you warmed me, with one hold.
You dried my tears, held me to your heart.
It was on that day my life did start.

Then I would roll, scoot, and crowl.
I would grow two feet tall.
I would walk and talk and all the while.
Your face was full of love and smiles.

But I was so small I did not see.
That you were learning as much as me.
You had school and work which made you be
At many times away from me.

Now I'm bigger and I know.
You had to do, you had to go.
Those things that took you I can see.
Were things you had to do for me.

So pelase forgive me if I cry.
And I'll forgive you all the time.
No matter what we have to do.
Always know that I love you.

"Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools."

Anything is Possible - Author Unknown
If there was ever a time to dare,
to make a difference,
to embark on something worth doing,
Not for any grand cause, necessarily...
but for something that tugs at your heart,
something that's your inspiration,
something that's your dream.

You owe it to yourself
to make your days here count.

Know, though, that things worth doing
seldom come easy.
There will be good days.
And there will be bad days.
There will be times when you want to turn around,
pack it up, and call it quits.
Those times tell you
that you are pushing yourself,
that you are not afraid to learn by trying.

Because with an idea,
determination, and the right tools,
you can do great things.
Let your instincts, your intellect,
and your heart, guide you.

Believe in the incredible power of the human mind.
Of doing something that makes a difference.
Of working hard.
Of laughing and hoping.
Of lazy afternoons.
Of lasting friends.
Of all the things that will cross your path this year.

The start of something new
brings the hope of something great,
Stopping before you reach the goal does not make the discouragement go away. All it does is make the discouragement permanent. Instead, keep going, keep making the attempt, until you make that last, fulfilling attempt that brings the success you desire. -- Ralph Marston

Imagine A Woman - Patricia Lynn Reilly
Imagine a woman who believes it is right and good she is a woman.
A woman who honors her experience and tells her stories. Who refuses to carry the sins of others within her body and life.

Imagine a woman who trusts and respects herself.
A woman who listens to her needs and desires.
Who meets them with tenderness and grace.

Imagine a woman who has acknowledged the past's influence on the present.
A woman who has walked through her past.
Who has healed into the present.

Imagine a woman who authors her own life.
A woman who exerts, initiates, and moves on her own behalf. Who refuses to surrender except to her truest and wisest voice.

Imagine a woman who names her own gods.
A woman who imagines the divine in her image and likeness.
Who designs a personal spirituality to inform her daily life.

Imagine a woman in love with her own body.
A woman who believes her body is enough, just as it is.
Who celebrates her body's rhythms and cycles as an exquisite resource.

Imagine a woman who honors the body of the Goddess in her
changing body.
A woman who celebrates the accumulation of her years and her wisdom.
Who refuses to use her precious life energy disguising the changes in her body and life.

Imagine a woman who values the women in her life.
A woman who sits in circles of women.
Who is reminded of the truth about herself when she forgets.

Imagine yourself as this woman.

Delight in The Journey - Ralph Marston

Those who delight in the journey will also get the most enjoyment after reaching the destination. Those who whine and complain all the way there will continue to be miserable even when they arrive, if they ever make it that far.

Find joy and fulfillment in the process of achievement and the rewards will be most fulfilling too. For the real value of the reward is in the effort, the commitment, the substance of life that goes into reaching it.

Certainly it takes a great deal of effort, focus and discipline to achieve an ambitious goal. But who says those things must be unpleasant? Actually, whether something is unpleasant or not is usually just a matter of opinion. And you are free to change your opinion at any time.

Imagine what would happen if you could truly and sincerely enjoy those activities that are necessary for reaching the success you desire. Consider how much more interested, enthusiastic, skilled, committed and persistent you would be.

Take delight in the journey, enjoy what you're doing, while you're doing it, whatever it may be. And you'll truly arrive in style and grace, wherever you wish to go.
