I am a PhD candidate & graduate research/teaching assistant at Michigan State University in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, where I am being advised by Dr. Alex Liu. I received my B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 2013 from the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) of Lahore University of Managment Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan, where I worked on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as an Undergraduate Research Assistant, and later as a full-time Research Associate in Advanced Communications (AdCom) Lab, before moving to Michigan in 2014. My general research interests lie at the intersection of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences such as Sensing & Control Systems, Applied Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Pervasive Computing, Wireless Communications, RF Sensing, Mobile Computing, Signal Processing, Embedded Systems, Performance Modeling, and Data Mining.

Most of my PhD research is themed around the concept of what I call "Sensing Without Sensors". By without here I mean without "dedicated" sensors or sensing infrastructure. The thing is that many electronics around us are usually designed to serve a very specific purpose. I was super interested in diving into the physical layer of some of these technologies and see if I can leverage the signals obtained from their physical layer either to develop new sensing applications or to see if I can improve the existing protocols those technologies to enable even more useful deployment scenarios - which they are not originally designed for. Moreover, I wanted to achieve that by completely avoiding any hardware level changes and by developing the techniques such that they will require changes at the firmware or software level only. The key motivation behind all this was the increasing popularity of Internet of Things (IoTs). And we know that many IoT applications require dedicated hardware and infrastructure for communication and sensing. In contrast, my goal was to leverage the existing infrastructure and off-the-shelf readily available hardware only to enable new sensing and communication mechanisms for the future IoTs.
