I am currently completing my second rotation in the Breedlove/Jordan lab. Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA) is a progressive neuromuscular disease linked to a polyglutamine expansion in the androgen receptor gene. To further investigate the pathophysiology of SBMA, we use different mouse models to look at brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Using qRT-PCR, we measure mRNA levels of three BDNF exons in various muscles. In between getting to know our mouse models better, we enjoy kicking back on lab dessert and nacho days.
