Brief Bio (as of 1/20/12)

Dr. Greenberg is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Communication and Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media at Michigan State University and former chairperson of those two departments at MSU. Retiring in 2004, he returned in 2008 for a semester as interim Dean of the College of Communication Arts & Sciences. For the past 15 years, he has led a summer Study Abroad program to England, Scotland and Wales.

Dr. Greenberg's research career has centered on the social content and effects of contemporary mass media on children, adolescents and adults.

Recent projects include: (a) a methodological comparison of Internet use from survey, diary and e-tracking systems, (b) factors associated with state by state transition to digital television, Š the role of 'drench theory' in understanding responses to media violence; and (d) an updated chapter on mass communication theory and research.

The author of more than 200 published academic articles and chapters and 10 research books, Dr. Greenberg's most recent book, Communication and Terrorism: Public and Media Responses to 9/11, was published by Hampton Press.

Dr. Greenberg is a Fellow of the International Communication Association and past president of that organization. Academic leaves have included appointments with the British Broadcasting Corporation, the East-West Center (Honolulu), the Independent Television Commission (London), the University of California (Berkeley), the University of Georgia (Athens), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta).

When semi-idle, Dr. Greenberg plays pickleball, walks with his wife and dog, talks with his three daughters (an attorney, a CPA, and a market researcher, all in hiatus as mothers), two sons-in-law (a judge and a corporate executive), and tries to keep up with and relate to eight grandchildren.
