All of the modules for class are available here. We'll also build the miscellaneous area of the site during the semester with the links, examples, and materials you share in your document design presentations.


The syllabus includes the course overview, readings and class materials, participation expectations, attendance policy, schedule, and assignments.

Once during the semester, you will be responsible for bringing in at least one designed document that you want to share with the class. You may choose the examples you present from your document design collection. You can bring in either a “bad” example or a “good” example.

Almost every day we have readings due (which is almost every day of class), I will post a prompt related to the readings on our shared Google Drive folder. As you read or after you read—but before the next class session—comment on the prompt I’ve provided. Feel free, also, to respond to each other as others comment on the prompt.

The two goals of the reading notes are, first, for you to reflect on and respond to the readings we’re doing for class, and, second, to create a huge, ongoing repository of good ideas, illustrations, illuminations, and more—that we can all contribute to and draw from.

ethics and academic integrity

The work you submit must be produced originally for this class and cannot be used for another course in the same semester without my permission. You should also credit others’ contributions to your work. You should not claim, as your own, work (or writing) that is not your own (to do so is considered plagiarism). It is perfectly appropriate for you to borrow graphics, to quote passages, and to use ideas from others. However, when you do so, follow appropriate credit-giving or citation conventions. University information about academic honesty is included in the Spartan Life: Student Handbook and Resource Guide (see, especially, http://splife.studentlife.msu.edu/spartan-code-of-honor-academic-pledge).


To receive any accommodation for any disability, students must first register with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. The RCPD will request appropriate documentation and make a determination regarding the nature of the accommodation to which a students is entitled. The RCPD will then give the student a “visa” that specifies the kind of accommodation that may be provided. It is then the responsibility of the student seeking accommodation to present the visa to his/her instructor.
