Please read ALL of the information below if you are considering an audition for the MSU Drumline.

Important notice concerning membership in the Spartan Marching Band:

You MUST be regularly admitted to MSU in order to participate in the Spartan Marching Band. The Spartan Marching Band is a class, and members of the SMB must sign up for MUS 114 and pay for one credit. This is not optional.

When and Where are Auditions?

Auditions for the 2018 Drumline will be held on Saturday, April 28, and Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. You must attend both dates if you would like to be part of the 2018 MSU Drumline. If you have a major conflict with one of the dates, please contact Dr. Jon Weber at drumline@msu.edu as soon as possible.

The auditions and help sessions outlined below are held at Demonstration Hall. A map to Demonstration Hall can be found here. The percussion room is on the south end of the building off of Demonstration Hall Road.

How Auditions Work:

You may audition for any instrument you wish. You may change the instrument you are auditioning for at any time; however, you must make the instrument you are auditioning for, as each instrument is auditioned separate from the others.

All of the music on the website (on the exercises page) will be used on the auditions. Some pieces are not online due to copyright protection. To obtain these pieces, please email Jon Weber at drumline@msu.edu. It is important to observe this copyright; do not share these works.

The website will be updated from time to time; please return to check if anything new has been posted. The audition music for 2018 will change from the music currently online! If you have a conflict with one of the auditions or have questions about the auditions, please contact Jon Weber at drumline@msu.edu

Help Sessions:

Help sessions are a great way to help prepare for auditions and/or just work on your drumming. These sessions are offered free of charge for anyone; you do not need to be auditioning for MSU to attend. You are welcome to attend whenever you are available; attendance is not mandatory. We have created a Facebook page to communicate for the help sessions; please search for MSU Drumline Help Sessions 2018 on Facebook and ask to join.

At the help sessions, you will have the opportunity to drum with members of the current MSU Drumline. Most of the time, you will be working with a specific subsection (snares, tenors, basses, or cymbals). You can change rooms / sections whenever you want to work on any instrument that you would like. We will have drums and cymbals for you to play; you should bring music and sticks / mallets.

For more information on the help sessions, please visit the Help Sessions Page.
