  • On 11/22/05 Dr. Matthew Zwiernik of the Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory presented: "What do we know"  an Information update and Present Status of Studies  in Support of an Environment Risk Assessment  for the Tittabawassee  River Basin. The presentation was to State and Federal Agencies, Stakeholder Trustees and PRPs and was presented at the Kellogg Center Hotel and Conference Center. Dr Zwiernik’s presentation summarized presentations given at the SETAC 2005 conference (see below).

SETAC 2005

  • Professor Giesy and 19 of his graduate students, post doctoral fellows and visiting scientists recently attended the 26th Annual meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (North America), which was held in Baltimore, Maryland. Link to Posters and Presentations

 

  • Prof. Giesy gave an invited presentation to the annual meeting of the Michigan Region of The Society of Toxicology held November 4 in East Lansing, Michigan. The theme of the meeting was biomonitoring. Link to Prof. Giesy’s presentation.

 

SETAC 2004

  • Professor Giesy and 17 of his graduate students, post doctoral fellows and visiting scientists recently attended the World Congress of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, which was held in Portland, Oregon. Link to Presentations and Posters

 

  • Prof. Giesy was a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Superfund Basic Research program, serving as a lead reviewer and resume preparer. The meeting to review 21 proposals was held in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, October 4-7, 2004.   • Prof. Giesy Participated in the 24th International Symposium on Halogenated Environmental Organic Pollutants and POPs, which was held September 6-10, 2004, Berlin Germany. He presented the Invited keynote paper entitled: “Toxicological Perspectives on Perfluorinated Compounds in Avian Species” (PRESENTATION AS PDF). He also chaired the session entitled: “Perfluorinated Compounds in the Environment”.   • Prof. Giesy attended the fall meeting of the Board of Scientific Councilors of the National Toxicology Program which was held in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Prof. Giesy was the lead discussant on Ionic liquids, a class of compounds nominated for a NTP study.   • Prof. Giesy had been made an Adjunct Professor, Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The appointment will allow him to work more closely with colleagues in the Toxicology Center at U of S.   • Prof. Giesy was invited to give an oral presentation at a Gordon Research Conference in Plymouth New Hampshire (June 27-July1) (Environmental Sciences: Water).   • Prof. Giesy has been appointed to a three year term on the Executive Committee of the Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) of the US EPA’s Office of Research and Development. This group advises EPA on their research programs and research directions. The BOSC recently met at the new EPA research laboratory in Research Triangle Park.   • Prof. Giesy recently attended a meeting of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which was held in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The NTP-BOSC advises the NTP on research directions and reviews NTP work products such as research projects and reports on nominated chemicals.   • Prof. Giesy recently presented the keynote address entitled “Ecological Risk Assessments for Perfluorinated Fatty Acids in the Marine Environment” to the 4th International Conference on Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology, June 1-5, Hong Kong, SAR, China can be found at the following link PRESENTATION.   • Prof. Giesy recently co-chaired a meeting June 7-10 in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China (Photographs). The meeting entitled “The Science-Based Decision Making to Reduce Risks from Persistent Organic pollutants (POPS) was a joint workshop of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, SCOPE-China and the US National Academies of Science. The primary overall objectives of the workshop are to bring scientists, engineers, policy makers and managers from government agencies, businesses and industries, academia and non-government organizations (NGOs) together to discuss issues relative to environmental protection and decision making. The organizers realize that there are many ways to accomplish the goal of applying sound science in a risk assessment-based decision process.   • Prof. Giesy and the Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory at Michigan State University have recently been selected to receive funding from the US EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Program on Computational Toxicology and Biology in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. “Chemical Induced Changes in Gene Expression Patterns (GEPs) using a Small Fish Model: A Systems Approach”. 2004-2007, $750,000.          Prof. Giesy was invited to present a keynote address entitled “Bioanalytical Techniques for Screening for AhR agonist Activities in Environmental Samples”.   • MSU Ecotoxicology Laboratory Investigates Polychlorinated-p-dibenzo dioxins in the Tittabawassee River, Michigan.

 

  • The MSU ETL investigates the environmental dynamics and potential risks of PCBs in the sediments and flood plain of the Kalamazoo River, Michigan.

 

  • The MSU ETL develops a rapid, sensitive method for screening for the potential effects of chemicals on hormone production and transformation.
