Many actors and singers had distinguished careers a century or more ago, and yet are now nearly forgotten. Such is the case of Emma Wixom, who sang opera under the name Emma Nevada. The path from her birth in an obscure California mining camp to an internationally

applauded prima donna was strewn with difficulties, but Emma Wixom was determined to reach the top of her profession. She spent most of her life in Europe, the center of opera in the 1880s and 1890s, making only sporadic visits to her home country.
