WHAT: GIScience - In this seminar we will study geographically oriented information processing systems. We will review and explore previous, and contemporary GIScience research. We will be reading a collection of papers produced by key researchers and practitioners from around the world

in various cognate fields of study. The topics we will investigate include, but are not limited to: History of GIS, Seminal contributions to GIScience, Analytical Cartography, GeoComputation, Interpolation, Generalization, GeoVisualization, Spatial Cognition, Time Geography, Data Mining, and Ontological Foundations for Geographic Information Science.

 

The overall goal of the course is to bolster your conceptual knowledge of previous and current GIScience research as well as to enhance your practical abilities to conduct state-of-the-art analyses using contemporary application techniques in a laboratory environment.

REQUIRED READINGS:

The course is built around discussion and readings. Readings will generally consist of peer-reviewed journal articles taken from leading GIScience journals. Copies of (or links to) the articles will be distributed the week before they are discussed.

COURSE POLICIES: I expect everyone to attend all sessions. The best way to do poorly in this class is to not attend the sessions. One good way to do well is to show up on time, prepared, and ready to participate in every session . This seminar can only be as good as each of you make it. With a few exceptions assignments are always due exactly one week after they are assigned; in most cases late work will not be accepted – so please let me know in advance if you will 1) miss a session, 2) need additional time to complete an assignment, 3) have any personal issues that will affect your class performance.
