Johannes M. Bauer, the Quello Chair in Media and Information Policy and Chairperson of the Department of Media and Information, is a researcher, writer, teacher, and academic entrepreneur. His ongoing research focuses on innovation in the next-generation Internet (Internet of Things, 5G wireless), digital entrepreneurship (both for-profit and social), and governance challenges.
He earned his MA and a PhD in economics from Vienna University of Economics in Austria, and joined Michigan State University in 1990. Since then, he has also spent time as a visiting professor with Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, the University of Constance in Germany, and the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
Professor Bauer is a member of LIRNEasia’s international scientific advisory board, a fellow of the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, and a member of the board of directors for iSchools. Much of his work is international and comparative in scope, and has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Ford Foundation, and other organizations. His research has been published in leading journals in the field, including Information Economics and Policy, Government Information Quarterly, Information Systems Frontiers, the International Journal of Communication, Telecommunications Policy, and The Information Society.
