Satish S. Udpa most recently served as Executive Vice President for Administration at Michigan State University, and has also served as dean of the College of Engineering and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India (1975), and M.S. (1980) and Ph.D. degrees (1983) in electrical engineering from Colorado State University. Prior to coming to MSU, Udpa was the Whitney Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University.
His research focuses on materials characterization and nondestructive evaluation, developing noninvasive tools for clinical applications, such as electromagnetic-acoustic methods for detecting failures in artificial heart valves and microwave imaging and ablation therapy systems.
He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), and the Indian Society of Nondestructive Testing. He is a full member of the Academia Nondestructive Testing International.
He has published extensively, holds several patents, and is the technical editor of the Electromagnetic Nondestructive Testing Handbook. He served as the editor of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics until recently and is the regional editor of the International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics.
At MSU, he received the University Distinguished Professor Award and the Robert F. Banks Award for Institutional Leadership. He is currently a member of the Michigan Governor’s Council for Future Mobility.
