SPARTANS MAKE A VITAL DIFFERENCE

From revolutionizing cancer treatment to sustaining our planet against the odds to preparing the leaders of tomorrow, it’s amazing what Spartans achieve together.

A group of individuals in a discussion with one person at the center speaking, in an industrial setting with machinery in the background.
Two people in a field operating a drone with a tablet, with overcast skies above and industrial structures in the distance.
Three individuals in lab coats sharing a conversation and a laugh in a well-equipped laboratory setting.
An individual presenting in front of a screen with a graph, gesturing with hands, in a lecture or meeting environment.
A diverse team of five collaborating on an engineering project in a tech-laden workshop, with one person operating a laptop and others examining electronic components.
A saxophonist in a plaid jacket playing his instrument with fervor, accompanied by an out-of-focus drummer in the background, in a room with wooden paneling.
An individual seated in a chair indoors, holding a book and smiling during a conversation, with large windows overlooking greenery in the background.

As president and CEO of the Detroit Historical Society, MSU alum Elana Rugh uses her skills to connect people to historical events and ensure they see themselves represented. “I learned to be a leader at MSU. The people that I met completely changed my world view.
Hannah Distinguished Professor Bruno Basso and his lab members have one mission: produce more food to feed a growing world. “My research focuses on understanding the nexus between climate, food, energy and water. These are critical resources we need to protect.”
Assistant Professor Carolina Ferreira develops new cancer therapies using rare isotopes. “In pharmacy school, I joined a lab that worked on cancer research, and as I was working on this type of cancer, my grandpa actually died from that cancer. I wanted to focus my life and my career on helping more kids get more time with their grandpas.”
Jason Miller leads MSU’s top-ranked supply chain management department, and shares his expertise to help keep the world’s products moving. “We’re creating the next generation of thought leaders at both the undergraduate and graduate level, so our students leave this place with a unique set of knowledge and a unique set of skills.”
Associate Professor Shanelle Foster received all three of her degrees from MSU. Today, she’s focused on developing greener vehicle engines — and a diverse group of future engineers. “I am a proud Spartan, so what better place to choose to be able to give back. Here, I’m able to contribute to the next Spartan engineer.”
MSU alum and musician Randy Scott shares his musical talents with young students in Detroit. “MSU allowed me to grow as a musician and as an adult. It allowed me the freedom to be myself musically and to really hone my skills. It’s allowed me to share all of the things I’ve learned with the next generation.”
Jennifer Johnson is a C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health at MSU who works to improve maternal mental health and health disparities in Flint and throughout Michigan. “We succeed because we’re building a partnership with the community, not in spite of it.”
