Erroneous report of gunman on campus (Feb. 24, 2014)

MSU police received reports at 12:56 p.m. Monday of a man with a gun near Bessey Hall.

Officers arrived on the scene at 12:58 p.m., and police immediately sent alert notifications to the MSU campus community. Officers arriving at the scene quickly located the person and determined he was a member of the MSU ROTC, carrying a ceremonial, replica rifle. MSU police sent out follow-up alerts to the campus community a few minutes later, canceling the alert.

MSU police would like to thank the student who originally called 911. As always, police urge all in the MSU campus community that if they see something, say something.

First alert:

MSU ALERT, Man with a gun seen heading into Bessey Hall secure-in-place immediately. Please advise others if you can. Visit msu.edu for more info

The second alert:

MSU ALERT, 2/24/14 at 1:00 pm we had a report of a person with a gun at Bessey Hall. MSUPD found a person using a training weapon and there is no threat.

Timeline

12:56 p.m.: Call made to dispatch

12:58 p.m.: Officers arrived on the scene

1 p.m.: MSU alert system activated

1:05 p.m.: Person identified as ROTC member

1:06 p.m.: All-clear given, and the alert system was then re-activated to reflect there was not a threat
